Lessons - Approach Shots
These shots can be the hardest shots in the game. If you have hit a good drive, you may feel under pressure, not to mess up your game by pulling this shot wide. The first thing that needs to be addressed here, is your mental attitude towards the shot.
At this point, if you are a more advanced player you may want to consider putting spin on the ball. To Learn how to do this, visit our Spin section.
A slightly smaller stance is used here, ie feet slightly closer together than usual. The ball should still be in the middle of your stance. A normal swing is used. The type of golf club used for approach shots is a club with a high loft, pitch wedge, sand wedge, loft wedge ect. In some cases it is appropriate the club face is more open than usual. This will give the ball more loft, but for less skilled players, can decrease accuracy. This is of course entirely dependant on the situation. One good way to think about this is to imagine yourself floating the ball up into the air and landing it softly on the green, right next to the flag.
